Physical fitness concerns added another layer to Gill’s exclusion.
He recently suffered a neck sprain during the Test series in South Africa that required hospitalization.
The injury forced him to miss the entire ODI series that followed.

“Rinku comes, who gives that lower middle-order option?” Agarkar explained, pointing to the team’s strategic needs for balance.
This decision meant accommodating players who fill specific roles rather than going purely on reputation or recent vice-captaincy appointments.

Agarkar made it clear that Gill remains highly rated by the selection panel. He called it “unfortunate” that Gill had to miss out despite his quality.
“Shubman is a quality player and unfortunate to miss out.
Combinations more than anything else,” the chief selector stated, stressing that someone had to be dropped given India’s depth.
Agarkar accepted that opinions can differ when selections are made, but insisted Gill’s exclusion should not be seen as a judgment on his long-term value.
“Sometimes when you pick players, it’s difficult. We still think he’s a quality player. Someone has to miss out,” he said.
For now, Gill will have to wait for another opportunity, with the selectors confirming that the door remains open for his return.
