Five players earned their first Proteas central contract.
Two veteran batters lost theirs. And CSA quietly launched a new 20-player development list that changes how the national pipeline works.
The CSA Contracts 2026-27 were announced on March 31, covering the period June 1, 2026, to May 31, 2027.
With the 2027 ODI World Cup on home soil and eight home Tests to play, the selection decisions carry real weight.

Who Got Left Out?
Men’s Key Omissions
The biggest name missing is David Miller. He held a hybrid contract last season — an arrangement that let him manage bilateral availability while playing in leagues like the Hundred.
Miller last missed South Africa’s white-ball tour to Australia in August 2025 to prioritise the Hundred. He has not announced retirement, but CSA has not renewed him.
Rassie van der Dussen also drops off. At 37, he was the other inaugural hybrid contract holder alongside Miller. Both appear to have been quietly phased out.
Anrich Nortje is absent for a different reason. He opted out of central contracts two years ago due to persistent injury issues and currently only plays T20 franchise cricket.
| Player | Previous Status | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| David Miller | Hybrid Contract | Not renewed |
| Rassie van der Dussen | Hybrid Contract | Age / availability |
| Anrich Nortje | Opted Out | Ongoing injury concerns |
| Reeza Hendricks | Full Contract | Not retained |
| Nandre Burger | Full Contract | Moved to PONI list |
| Gerald Coetzee | Full Contract | Moved to PONI list |
| Lizaad Williams | Full Contract | Not retained |
CSA confirmed that players not on the contract list remain eligible for selection in bilateral series and ICC events. Being dropped from the contract list does not automatically end international availability.
Women’s Key Omissions
| Player | Status |
|---|---|
| Dane van Niekerk | Not retained |
| Kayla Reyneke | Not retained |
| Eliz-Mari Marx | Not retained |
First-Time Contracted Players: What to Know
- Dewald Brevis
The most talked-about name on the new list. Brevis has been building his case since his early teens and has played enough senior cricket to justify the call. The maiden contract is overdue for many.
- Ottneil Baartman
The Dolphins seam bowler has been one of the more consistent wicket-takers in domestic cricket. His inclusion signals that CSA wants more pace options as the World Test Championship campaign heats up.
- Corbin Bosch
A genuine all-rounder from the Titans. He can contribute with both bat and ball, which gives selectors options in multi-format squads.
- Matthew Breetzke
A composed top-order batter with a growing red-ball record. His contract puts him in the frame for Test selection during the busy home series season.
- Karabo Meso (Women)
Just 18, Meso has already proved herself at a senior level. She is the only new addition to the women’s squad, which tells you how settled that group is, and how much confidence CSA has in her.
The PONI List: CSA’s 20-Player Pipeline
The Players of National Interest list is new for 2026-27. CSA designed it to track top Division 1 performers and keep them ready for national selection.
These players are domestically contracted and are first in line for South Africa A tours.
Selection convener Patrick Moroney framed it clearly: “It remains important that we continue building depth and strengthening our pipeline with PONIs, while remaining competitive at the highest level.”
Notable names on the list include Nandre Burger and Gerald Coetzee, who drop from full contracts to this tier rather than being cut entirely.

Conclusion:
The CSA contract list for 2026-27 is a clear statement of direction. Miller and Van der Dussen are out.
Brevis, Baartman, Bosch, and Breetzke are in. The PONI system adds a proper pipeline layer that did not formally exist before.
Moroney summed it up: “These groups give us a strong base” heading into the busiest period South African cricket has faced in years.
Whether the new faces can step up at home against Australia, England, and Bangladesh will answer the bigger question about whether CSA got these selections right.
