Five titles. The most in IPL history. No close rival.
That’s the short version of the Mumbai Indians IPL history.
But the longer version is more interesting, because MI didn’t arrive as instant champions.
They were runners-up in 2010. They lost the finals. They rebuilt squads.
And when they finally got it right, they didn’t stop at one.
Mumbai Indians IPL History
If you’re here to understand what makes MI the IPL’s most successful franchise, the owners, the captains, the records, the players, this is the full story.
The Origins: Who Owns Mumbai Indians and How It All Started?
Mumbai Indians were formed in 2008 as one of the eight original IPL franchises. The team is owned by Reliance Industries, one of India’s largest corporations.
Nita Ambani represents the franchise at the ownership level and has been its most visible face since the first season.
Their home ground is the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai — one of the loudest and most electric venues in world cricket.
The first-ever MI playing XI included Sanath Jayasuriya, Robin Uthappa, Harbhajan Singh, and Ashish Nehra.
Sachin Tendulkar was named the team’s Icon Player – a special designation for marquee Indian players in the IPL’s first two seasons.
They finished 5th in 2008 and 7th in 2009. Sachin won the Orange Cap in 2010 with 618 runs, and MI reached their first-ever IPL final — but lost. The trophy kept waiting.

Mumbai Indians IPL Titles: The Full List
MI has won the IPL five times. That’s two more than any other team. Here’s the complete record:
| Year | Final Opponent | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 2013 | Chennai Super Kings | MI won |
| 2015 | Chennai Super Kings | MI won |
| 2017 | Rising Pune Supergiant | MI won |
| 2019 | Chennai Super Kings | MI won |
| 2020 | Delhi Capitals | MI won |
Three of those five finals were against CSK. MI won all three. For the full breakdown, see the most IPL titles by franchise.
2013 — Breaking Through at Last
The 2013 season had a mid-season captain change.
Ricky Ponting stepped down, dropped himself from the XI, and handed the armband to Rohit Sharma.
It turned out to be one of the best decisions in franchise cricket history.
MI beat CSK in the final. Harbhajan Singh, their lead spinner, took 24 wickets in the tournament.
A teenage fast bowler named Jasprit Bumrah had just joined — and he announced himself by dismissing Virat Kohli on debut.
MI also won the Champions League T20 that same year. A double in their first title season.
2015 — Nine Wins from the Last Ten
The 2015 campaign is remembered for its finish. MI won nine of their final ten games to claim the trophy.
Lasith Malinga led the bowling with 24 wickets. Lendl Simmons topped the batting charts with 540 runs.
Hardik Pandya made his IPL debut that year — arriving with a 61 off 31 balls against KKR, making it clear this was no ordinary talent.
2017 — Three Titles and a New Record
No franchise had won three IPL titles before. MI changed that in 2017 with a final so close that it came down to the last over.
Mitchell Johnson defended 10 runs in the final over against the Rising Pune Supergiant to seal victory.
Jasprit Bumrah finished the season with 20 wickets and a spell of 3/7 against KKR in the qualifier that will be studied for years.
MI also posted their highest team total in the league stage — 223/6 against Kings XI Punjab.
2019 — First Team to Four Titles
The 2019 final was again against CSK. MI won by one run — one of the tightest IPL finals ever.
Alzarri Joseph took 6/12 on debut against SRH — still the best debut bowling figures in IPL history.
Quinton de Kock scored 529 runs and took 15 dismissals behind the stumps — a first for any wicketkeeper in a single IPL season.
MI also became the first team to win 100 IPL matches this season.
2020 — Back-to-Back and a Fifth Star
The record fifth title arrived in a COVID-affected season held in the UAE.
Ishan Kishan scored 516 runs. Bumrah took 27 wickets — his best IPL season.
MI became the first team to play 200 IPL matches in the same season they won the trophy.
Back-to-back titles. No one else had done it. MI had now done it twice (2019–20).
MI Captain History
Captaincy at MI has shaped the franchise more than almost anything else.
| Captain | Period |
|---|---|
| Harbhajan Singh | 2012 |
| Sachin Tendulkar | Multiple early stints |
| Ricky Ponting | 2013 (stepped down mid-season) |
| Rohit Sharma | 2013 onwards (all five titles) |
| Hardik Pandya | 2024 |
Rohit Sharma is the undisputed captain of the dynasty era.
He played his 200th match for MI in 2024, making him the first player to reach that milestone for the franchise.
His captaincy record across all IPL seasons is the benchmark for franchise leadership in T20 cricket.

Key Players Who Built the MI Legacy
- Sachin Tendulkar gave the franchise its early identity. He won the Orange Cap in 2010, hit MI’s only century in the 2011 season, and retired after the 2013 final — never winning an IPL trophy, despite the team winning it that very year in his last game.
- Lasith Malinga was MI’s most dangerous bowler across a decade. His 28 wickets in 2011 won him the CLT20 Man of the Tournament award. At his best, there was no one harder to face at the death.
- Kieron Pollard joined in 2010 and became the most reliable finisher the team had. He played 150+ matches for MI, hit more sixes than anyone in the franchise’s history, and led MI Emirates in the UAE’s ILT20 after retirement.
- Jasprit Bumrah is the most complete MI fast bowler ever. His debut dismissal of Kohli was the start of something long and dominant. His 27-wicket 2020 season and near-unplayable yorkers at the death made him MI’s most valuable player in the title years.
- Hardik Pandya made his debut in 2015 as a power-hitting all-rounder. He left as the captain of the Gujarat Titans to two titles, came back to MI in 2024, and remains central to their long-term plans.
- Suryakumar Yadav arrived at MI in 2012 across stints and became the most explosive batter in T20 cricket globally. His 717-run 2025 season is the new standard for MI batting.
The MI vs CSK Factor
You can’t tell the Mumbai Indians story without talking about their rivalry with the Chennai Super Kings. Three finals. All won by MI.
The MI vs CSK head to head record is the most-watched rivalry in IPL history, with each clash feeling like a knockout.
It’s worth knowing MI have also beaten CSK in the league stage multiple times, including chasing 219 against CSK in 2021 — their highest-ever successful run chase.
Current MI Squad and the Global Franchise
Mumbai Indians today are more than one team.
They own franchises across six leagues: IPL, WPL (Mumbai Indians women), SA20 (MI Cape Town), ILT20 (MI Emirates), MLC (MI New York), and The Hundred (Oval Invincibles).
No other IPL franchise has expanded globally at the same pace.
For the IPL 2026 squad, the core includes Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit Sharma, Tilak Varma, and Hardik Pandya.
Tilak Varma became MI’s youngest half-centurion at 19 years and 145 days back in 2022 — he’s now a key part of the batting line-up.
Understanding how MI has built its squad across the years through the IPL auction is a study in smart franchise planning.
